hey ! i have a new official website ...!

dear boys and gurls

it's true ...i had purchased the domain name and hosting package already some time ago ... buut somehow i failed to see how to create a new link once i had figured out the homepage and to create the second page alltogether ...

i called the helpdesk but they didn't support HTML said one person ... then i called again and the explanation she gave me was spoken in tongues if you'd ask me ..

anyway, a couple months later and lots of wasted time and money i finally managed ...don't ask me how ... this is my first real website i build with HTML and all .. to get my stuff working ...

i tried testing on as many browsers as i could, and didn't even had to download the mac's safari browser because my ex-producer (yes, we just wrapped up a project together, and that's a whole" other story for a whole other blog post) happened to have a macbook on which i could test my website ...

it worked fine ...

i must say i am very proud of the accomplishment, i just used a printed HTML-course and some online tutorials and those did the trick nicely

one funny thing though ...when i first wanted to post sound samples on my website i tried it the old fashioned way ...through HTML tags ..oh boy that was such a mistake ... you should check out the sound page for yourself for the sheer simplicity with with i tackled the problem ...for one thing is sure ..these sound tags must be out of date or something but they never worked ...

my Betty Donelly official website features lots of stuff besides the songs' page like an artist section, some photos, a stories page (!!) ..well i could've thrown in a lot more of them stories but just hang on to this blog because that's where all the juicy meat behind Betty Donelly, the person and artist will shine!

hello there

knowing that i've been neglecting my blog lately, i thought it was time to start putting some energy into it again...

i haven't uploaded any new songs on reverbnation lately, ...oh and by the way...although i am a member of countless music communities where you can listen to some of my songs...i now exclusively upload new songs to reverbnation which i find to be the best out there...

but the reason behind the fact that i didn't upload any new songs is this...

since quite some time now i've been recording tracks, mostly electric guitar..some bass tracks and some vocals...

everything happens in a cultural center...where i am joined by an italian producer/sound engineer...we try to record as much as we can...but having to record in the main theater room, where the mixer console is situated has its disadvantages because we always have to make reservations for the room, and the room becomes less and less available...

so how did i get involved in this cultural center?...well, i got asked by this choreographer who's doing a contemporary dance project, and this guy is working for the center...

moreover, he asked me to let him use my music in the dance performance and he needs a soundtrack...besides dancing in the play, i will also be playing live on stage, ..

the soundtrack will consist of a mixture of the famous classical composer Darius Millaud and my songs, rearranged to merge with the classical masterpieces, which will result in a more contemporary, jazzy soundtrack...

still haven't met the composer/arranger of the project and it beats me how the end result will sound like...

so with all the dance rehearsals and recording sessions...i have been neglecting my online efforts a bit...so i think it's time for some serious planning on how to merge all my activities into a neat daily schedule...

so...that's it for now...

words were written by Robert Louis Stevenson in the nineteen hundreds...the words that i use anyway...because there's plenty of versions going round ...just look up the song in youtube and you'll find all about it...if you're interested of course...

and i've even made an easy video, you'll see...!

NEW betty donelly oldie released on MEVIO

hello again

i know this will sound a bit weird but last night i was googling my own name and stumbled upon the betty donelly MEVIO profile...

i didn't even know i had such a profile, and what's more i did a weird discovery...i found that i actually had uploaded a never before released song called TRACY...it's the first song i ever wrote back in the eighties and this version was performed by my former band THE ELEPHANTS in the early nineties (probably 1993 in brussels, belgium)...

it's a digitised version taken from an old cassette that was recorded through the PA system, which is why you can't really hear much of the audience screaming with enthousiasm...

the very beginning of the recording is missing so i guess that's why i never published the song on the worldwide interweb!

but anyhoo...now it's available for your listening pleasure on MEVIO ...

so it's definitely worth checking out ...

who is betty donelly - the early days

who is betty donelly?



more information can already be found, scattered throughout the worldwide interweb ...

as for my musical schooling, i must say that thanks to my dad, i
started out very early when he send me to music school to study the
violin and music theory at age seven...

apparently i was better with my instrument than i was with the theory,
because after a few years, i was a couple years ahead on the violin,
due to having failed a few times in music theory

that was really no fun anymore, because on the violin i was presented
with materials that hadn't even been covered in my theory class, so i
quit when i was fourteen years old..

a bit later i got hold of an old spanish guitar, and learned slowly at
first, by playing along with music mainly from the band the cure, who's
music eventually shaped my life, my soul and my beliefs and way of
thinking

at seventeen, having stripped our high school band from their guitar
player, we formed our first band, which i got the honour to name..the
name choice was a no brainer for me, i called the band the fear...

i used the 'the', because i wanted us to be included in the long
traditional hall of fame list of bands that start their band name by
'the', including the beatles, the rolling stones, the byrds, the cure
and such

i used 'the fear', because that was my main emotion at that time...i
was in particular very aware of the feeling i was born in the wrong
era, the feeling of being born a couple hundred years too early...i was
constantly feeling alienated from this current primitive society...a
humanity still in it's puberty, with all its testosterone induced wars,
power games, cold wars and groce injustice...

the music of the fear, in which i played the bass, was obviously very
dark and somber, painting an image of a depressed state of mind, and
love sorrows mainly...there is one song of the fear online over HERE , a tune called one last time, one of our early gemstones

after a fight with the guitar player/singer, the three piece
(guitar/vocals, drums, bass), disintegrated and shortly after i was
able to form another band called the elephants, a band name i had once
again chosen myself, and which reflected my already deep rooted
concerns about the earth's environmental decay...in particular, listen to
the song 'deep' on the same page as mentioned just above..

the elephants existed for four or five years maybe, with a kickstart in
the end of the eighties, until the band once more disintegrated back in
1993

the musicforte page could be considered a tribute to my early years as
a band member, and still holds deer and fond memories in my heart...it
was a great period after all...we managed to gig regularly and created
a regional buzz and following, ending up playing gigs in venues that
supported 500-800 people, playing local festivals and youth clubs...

after a long period of just working to earn my daily bread, i managed
to record two songs on my computer in 2004, all by myself...my first
solo songs...

these two songs, 'my untouchable friend' and 'the void', can be found HERE

this marked the start of betty donelly solo....

currently betty donelly is writing new material in the form of words, lyrics, guitar riffs and bass lines

"i have been writing a lot of pages recently and just finished recording work versions of two new songs...

i'll just have to wait for one song to be cleared at the performance rights society and then in the mean time i'll record a definite version...sort of...i'm still stuck recording from the comfort of my living room so no drums...i'm really no good at electronic drums and such.."

so watch out for the betty donelly reverbnation page where the new song will be posted as soon as possible

first betty donelly professional photoshoot is a wrap..

hi again

on 23 june 2008 i got up at about 5:30 AM to get ready for the shoot..i also had an audition planned in the same location, so i had to pack my gear as well...

i thought it would be cool to have my little amp and two guitars with me as well as a mike stand and of course..a mike..one guitar is an electro-acoustic black stagg guitar and the other is the Ultracure, designed by Robert Smith from the cure...so be sure to check out these photos once i've put them up..

i especially want to thank my mother for being so kind to drive me there..it wasn't far...but it was rush hour and just the fact that she had to get out of bed so early for me was just very nice of her...

so we did more than 300 pictures which i will get to see tomorrow...i can't wait!...

it'll be a fantastic way to spice up my myspace and other social networking pages...and they'll be part of great promo packages or press kits to send out to clubs and venues for landing gig contracts...

yesterday i made some changes to the song 'my untouchable friend' and started writing two new songs...more on that later..

the business side of betty donelly

being fascinated by the marriage of art and business is nothing to be ashamed of...on the contrary, learning to channel creative energy into innovative business deals is something which excites me and is something i should be proud of, if i really want to establish myself as an artist..

so that's exactly what i am doing: learning the basics of the music business..

there's no point in waiting or hoping for that big break, unless i take matters in my own hands, by doing it myself.

over time, i have gathered bits and pieces of information, but the puzzle never really was complete...

well, i did some basic research on some topics of the music business and suddenly i already have a much clearer picture...

i always had trouble defining basic but very important things like goals, both short and long term, strategies and tactics...

what i really lacked was some clear vision in my mind of how to reach goals i didn't even had!...the mental picture or vision is slowly emerging in my mind...and a clear vision leads to a mission and gives this mission the necessary energy to forge forward in faith.

the mission implements my vision and provides a vehicle to move toward my goals...

i would go further and state that my ambition to be a professional musician started long ago with a dream...one big dream that would go on and on...this dream created in me a burning desire...and i think it is this desire that is the starting point of my journey toward reaching my goals...a desire is something completely different than a wish...i could wish for that big break all i want, unless i have this burning desire to actually take action, nothing will happen...

i realise that i have reached the village from where i will start my climb to the mount everest base camp..and that the journey to the top will be long, hard and full of obstacles...

betty has just released a new home recording called 'the storm will never pass'

the song is not new though (2005)...but the recording is..

the song means a lot to me...i played this song in 2006 at the funeral of two of my friends who committed suicide by jumping in front of a passing train hand in hand...i just replaced the words 'me' and 'i' to 'you'.

on this page, a remake of 'in the begin' can be found as well...i think it's better than the reverbnation version, in which the solo guitar had a lot of mistakes...so i will replace the reverbnation version with the remake recording as soon as i am able...i'm not a solo guitar player, but being a solo artist forces me to take up that task...i try my hardest and i sure need to practice a lot if i want to get into the studio...

i have plans in that direction...i found a studio for 15 €/hour..which is dead cheap..

i want to demo three songs..my best songs..but i'm still unsure as to which ones i should choose...
